I am Toby Kalkman. I build software in Lowestoft, Suffolk, commissioned, released, or running quietly for nobody but me. Kalkman Code is where all of it lives.
No handover
The usual way a software project goes wrong is a handover: sold by one person, specified by another, built by a third. There is nobody to hand over to here. You deal with the person writing the code, and when something is wrong you are telling the person who can fix it.
Before this
Five years at an IT managed service provider in Norwich, where I finished as a service engineer still running the first-line team of six. Servers, cloud identity, networks and the machines on people’s desks. It is why what I build comes with somewhere to run it and a way back if it breaks, rather than a repository and good luck.
Paid, and then yours
Ask me to build something and it costs, every time, whatever it is for. It starts with a free conversation, then paid discovery, then a fixed price against the specification that discovery produced. At the end it is handed over outright, source included, and you are free to take it anywhere. How a commission runs has the whole of it.
What I give away, and why
Some of what I build costs me nothing to hand on, so I hand it on. HorseDex is free on the App Store, Launchdeck and Bakeoff are MIT on GitHub, Tabby is free on the Chrome Web Store. That is a decision I make about my own work, not a discount anybody qualifies for, and some builds are private and stay private.

Work aimed at somebody else’s business: a new website, complete brand design, search and AI visibility, a ground-up review of the tech behind it, and looking after that tech once it is running. If the job is about a business rather than a piece of software, it belongs there.
